Fixing the WordPress 3.1 Redirect Loop Problem with Windows Servers

by on Feb.28, 2011, under Free, Info

Recently I updated a WordPress site to version 3.1, but when I went to the main site URL, I would get the error message:

This webpage has a redirect loop
The webpage at has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

It looks like there is some problem with in WordPress 3.1 on Windows Server, but I was able to find a simple workaround to the issue. Here are the steps I took to correct the problem for my WordPress site:

  1. Go to the WP admin page at: http://your_site_name/wp-admin/ (it should still work, even if your home page doesn’t).
  2. Login and go to the Plug-ins admin page.
  3. Install and activate the “Permalink Fix & Disable Canonical Redirects Pack” plugin (at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/permalink-fix-disable-canonical-redirects-pack/).
  4. Go back to your homepage, it should work!

Anyway, I hope this helps save you some time and a headache that I went through to fix this problem for myself!
